In the late 19th century, the infamous Berlin Conference of 1884-85 was held to divide up the continent of Africa among European powers. The conference, which was convened by German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, was attended by representatives from 14 European countries and the United States. The participants agreed to establish rules for the colonization and trade of Africa, disregarding the interests and sovereignty of the various African states and peoples. This resulted in the arbitrary drawing of borders that ignored ethnic and linguistic boundaries, leading to decades of conflict and instability across the continent.
