Drift - It’s the quiet, they say, that gets to you. Sure, there are little noises, like the hum of the air scrubbers and the various system beeps. But those get buried in the background pretty quickly. After six months in orbit, I can only exhume those sounds by focusing on them. I still remember the first time I heard an unfamiliar voice and realized it was my own. Staring down at the planetoid’s mesmerizing surface, I questioned again whether I’d be able to fulfill the full two-year tour. The work was easy, the creature comforts plentiful, and the pay was life-changing. If I can endure this, everything will be different. A year and a half to go.
