Slicing Water - The moment she turned the thing on, my vision seemed to go haywire. The sides of the cup before me became wavy, like reality was having bad reception. The water she had been pouring into the cup was still there, but frozen in freefall. She let go of the pitcher with a flourish, grinning at the impossible tower of cup/water/pitcher that remained standing like a magician’s trick. “Watch this,” she smirked. Grabbing a knife off of the table, she deftly sliced down through the water column. The cup and water both reacted to the slice as if they were made of jello, separating in a clean diagonal cut, but warping in the direction of the stroke, like icing. No longer supported, the pitcher fell to the floor. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. The water column remained, rigidly projecting up from the bottom of the cup, with a sliced top.
