Woodland Forget-Me-Nots (Night)

Woodland Forget-Me-Nots (Night) - The forest forget-me-not grows up to 50 cm high, exceptionally higher. It is branched from just below the middle, but often with a fairly distinct main stem. The whole plant is hairy and green with a greyish-green tinge. The crown is large and flat-collared, 6-10 mm. wide, the petals sky-blue, though whitish at the base, and with small yellow scales. Calyx has long, pointed calyx-tongs and is divided about 2/3 down. It is covered with hook-shaped hairs. The fruit is a 4-part split fruit, as for the other species in the genus, but the part-fruits often hang from the hook-haired calyx, which thus comes to function as a "prestelus". It's spread is here and there in the native habitats of moist-fertile deciduous forests. Common as stray from cultivation on suitable biotopes, and spreading. It blooms in late April-early June. At night, this flower glows in a blue glow. Samples collected shows traces of the mineral Sodalite.
