Mosaic Puffball (Day) - The Mosaic Puffball is common in the painted forest and is edible as long as it is completely white inside. However, it does not have a particularly good taste. You can mix it with other edible mushrooms. This is one of the mushrooms you will often find if you go for several walks in the woods. You can also often find old specimens in small groups. These will stay for a long time. The fungi is a medium-sized anther that grows up to 8 cm high and 4 cm wide. It is whitish with a top covered with small scales/spikes. These scales can be easily rubbed off and underneath these a net-like pattern can be seen. When it matures it turns brown and leaves a hole at the top where the spores are emitted. If you press the mushroom at this stage you can see the spores coming out of the top. Mosaic Puffball mushrooms have no particular smell or taste. The mushroom can grow singly, scattered or together in small groups. It grows in both deciduous and coniferous forests, but is also found near roads or towns. It is rare on rotten wood.
