A Dream of Ghosts

Had Chakratch been here before? There was the human, in slumber, at the same distance away… as what? Last time. Ah, yes. Chakratch had woken Kanko before. Why had they returned? The forest was different, the trees sparser and the understory dense. A tar bush bubbled behind. It couldn’t happen twice, and yet Chakratch felt himself reaching out again. But his arm was pale, and he realized suddenly he could see! It felt so natural, this sight, as if he had seen his whole life. His body was not the shade he imagined, and it stirred a faint memory, a myth from the humans. What was it? Something about translucent beings who existed after death. Chakratch’s hand met Kanko, but passed through. Not because he was a ghost, but because the human wasn’t there. In its place, a reflection, a dream. Where had Kanko gone, and where had Chakratch learned of ghosts?
