Super Mario was created by Japanese video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto and was first released in 1985 as a platform game for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The character was designed as a heroic Italian plumber named Mario, who must save Princess Toadstool from the evil Bowser. The game was an instant success, selling over 40 million copies worldwide. It has since become one of the most recognizable and beloved video game franchises of all time, spawning numerous sequels and spin-offs, as well as merchandise and media adaptations. Over the years, Mario has become a cultural icon and symbol of the video game industry.
